Subsmarine subtitles9/20/2023 ![]() ![]() If you don’t regularly use subtitles, then you can just grab them direct from one of the sites listed above whenever you do need them. Fully-automatic options can sometimes grab the wrong file, and the last thing you want to do when you sit down to watch the latest Better Call Saul is to have to start manually futzing with incorrect subtitles, instead of laughing along with the hilarious story of a lawyer gradually becoming corrupt. I like this semi-manual approach because it lets me choose the subtitle I want. Set up like this, I just launch SubsMarine, wait for it to scan my TV and movies folder, then check the subs I want, before hitting Download. The General preference pane is also the spot to tell SubsMarine to automatically scan a particular folder when the app launches. I also have it set to ignore videos with subtitles, so it doesn’t list any shows or movies that are already processed. This makes the subtitles play nice with my movie-watching app of choice, VLC. I have it set to rename subtitles to match the original video file name, and to download the subtitles to the same file. Mine is configured as in the screenshot above. It scans the Movies folder on your computer, detects any movie files, and then searches for subtitles using several of the above-listed services. SubsMarine is a $6.00 app from developer Cocoawithchurros. But we’re going to ignore all of these websites and look at an app instead. They’ll all get the job done, subtitle-finding wise. ![]() These have interfaces of varying annoyance and difficulty, and some have deliberately confusing links that trick you into clicking things you don’t want to click. The mains sites for subtitles are SubScene, Open Subtitles, Podnapisi, and Betaseries. TV show subtitles are usually available mere hours after the show broadcasts, so if you’re in the habit of downloading ripped TV shows, you won’t have to wait. These sites let you search for subtitles based on language, and for TV shows you can also specify the season and episode number. You can search for them in your preferred search engine, but better is to look at one of the main aggregation services. ![]() That issue aside, the name of this app is a rip-off of another much older - and still functioning app called SubsMarine by CocoaWithChurros, which I have been using for years. There are lots of sources for subtitles on the internet, and almost all subtitles are created for free by enthusiastic movie-lovers. I think this developer needs to be more transparent regarding why he requires an email address. Demanding a person's email address does not make it really free, because the potential user is being forced to surrender part of his/her privacy, and we all know how email addresses are traded and sold across the Internet. In my view, the app is either free - without any catches - or it is not free. Exactly how is that fair? It all just seems a bit shady to me, and does not inspire confidence in the developer. He/she claims that it is a fair deal - a "free" app for an email address. and who does not love a menu bar applet? ) probably not as a replacement, because then resizing might be a problem, but alongside? but that's a luxury.Ĭonsidering that this app is supposedly free, why does the developer require an email address before allowing someone to download it? Exactly what are his/her intentions with harvesting email addresses? Is he/she then going to hound the downloader to purchase some of his/her commercial apps? if the app already utilizes the cover image why not have the user be able to drag and drop it? ability to drop more than one movie file and get results separated visually depending on the file dropped. after getting the search results drag and drop a sub from the list to a local folder would save a few clicks ![]() the app automatically renames files as the movie file to be added by movie Superb app! A few ideas if you are interested: search by drag and drop the movie file. Wonderful things besides getting around the opensubs website interface and the hassle of downloading: On the definition of "free", yes, there is a trade happening. Maybe optional, but that's why there are those kind of mail addresses that invite spam more than the others ). And, yes, purposes should be stated restrictively and upfront, if I overlooked them. Sign up to our newsletter today!" why that would be important I suppose we all know. Never miss a new feature, release, announcement or deal. Here is one of the purposes right from the devs page "Stay up to date! ![]()
